back in the office
out of the saddle
What follows is a mishmash of what we've been up to lately in Vicenziland. Presented in no particular order.
📝
In late August, my sister married a cool and thoughtful guy who happens to be a Navy pilot. A few weeks later, we packed up a car and headed out west – way out west, and north of the Whidbey Island Naval base. Our destination was a charming and All-American town called Anacortes, in Washington state above Seattle.
🍀
Three women, a shiny navy blue Tiguan, thirteen states, eleven days, unlimited tunes, one birthday, one GoPro and no social media. There were horses, ranches, bonfires (& s'mores!), snow, lots of good food and coffee. No bear or whale sightings but ample Big Sky and open water. It was blissful – a welcome reprieve from city living.
Now, back to reality and new work projects!

Mend It Monday workshops on 10/21 and 10/28 will be focused on costume support: mending, styling, vision boarding, etc. We have lots of supplies, machinery and expertise on hand. Bring yourself, your outfit/garment or work in progress or raw materials (if you have any), and we'll work together to (re)make a dream costume. I'm psyched to lend a hand and eye for styling.
Located @ Remade in Brooklyn, 663A Driggs Avenue in Williamsburg, BK. Open from 4-8PM & always free.
– FIELD TRIP RECAP –
Brimfield! It's adult Disneyland for the antique and curio kings and queens of the Northeast. We left with a fur coat, blue china lamp, silver utensils, embroidered blessings, and patchwork quilt squares to revamp some worn-out pants.
Save the dates for 2020: May 12-17, July 14-19, September 8-13

BLOCKPRINTING 101
IXV Coffee continues to take over the fashion world of NYC with her hands-on blockprinting workshops. Next up is a free drop-in session on Governor's Island as part of the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council's "Take Care" arts installation. Join us this Saturday 10/26 from 2-5PM, to print on your own clothes.
Easy and permanent, blockprinting proves to be one of the bolder ways for anyone to become a clothing artist and restyle our old things with a funky-fresh feel.

DISTRIBUTED ECONOMY
We recently co-hosted a Think Lunch at Betaworks Studios, discussing the role of companies if/when the economy shifts to support distributed business models. Most companies today are designed to extract: attention, materials, energy, space. When we design companies for 'distributism' instead, we could allow communities to self-organize and maximize resources locally. Business growth could align with resource reuse instead of unbounded extraction of new materials. While it's an interesting and optimistic topic to consider, we have a ways to go in proving viability.

CLEAN EATING, CLEAN TRASH
Composting began as an effort to minimize food waste (33% of New York's waste stream – comparatively, textiles make up 6%). It's a satisfying and VERY IMPORTANT way to "clean up" our contaminated trash (and take it out less often as a result). The composting habit has grown into a way to decipher what is "food" vs. a "food-like object" and shop/eat a wee bit healthier knowing any scraps will become soil for neighborhood gardens around Manhattan.
